Question from Kim: “I am having an issue with my pics being a little blurry…when I take a photo portrait orientation it looks great, but when I turn the camera and change no settings other than to landscape orientation the pic is slightly blurry…any thoughts?”

E Shay: Camera shake.

Valerie: Be sure you are using the correct focal points.

Christy: My Canon 24-105 has been blurry on the right side since day one. Even went back for repair three times. Crappiest lens I own.

Tom:  is it motion blur or out of focus that you observe?

Karen: Are you using IS? Tripod? What’s your f-stop? Focal point?

Kelly: Your focal point is probably off

Chelsie: Mine does that too! What focal point do most of you guys use to fix this?

Bridget: You could do a focal point test – set your camera on a tripod and work your way through a series of shots using different focal points and see how the focus is. Tape something to the wall that will give you a good reference to both focus on and to observe the results.

Brian: Have you checked for back and front focus?

Kim:  The pics that its doing it on are with f stop at 4 or 5.6 with a 50mm 1.4 lens and I am focusing on the persons eyes. It just seems out of focus, not motion blur.

Tony: Holding a camera in the vertical position is more difficult to hold steady, which is one reason why it’s nice to have a battery grip for your camera that has its own shutter button. This allows you to tuck in your elbows like you can for horizontal shots – you can hold the camera much steadier.

Tom: Kim, sounds like your lens might need to be calibrated.
