Question from Kanyon: “Im currently looking to get a macro lens for up close pics of my girl. I have other lens but I’m still deciding between a Canon Rebel 100mm, 50mm, or 60mm. What r the reviews on these lens? Which ones do y’all find most useful for pics inside on the kids & maybe some insect pics? This lens also versus non brand name lens-like Sigma instead of Canon? I currently have a Canon Rebel 28-250mm but it seems the macro is not working on it & I would rather invest in new lens.”
Ashley: I’ve been looking at these lenses as well. Interested to hear what people say!
Sophia: I have a canon and use the 18-200 for everything
Jennifer: I love my 50mm. I use it for almost everything and haven’t been disappointed. It made a lot of difference in my indoor and low-light photography 🙂
Melanie: I’ve owned two Canon macros – The Canon MP-E 65mm 1x-5x and the 100mm f/2.8 (non L series). I sold my MP-E (highly specialized macro lens) and kept the 100mm. I probably use the 100mm more than any other lens. You can see lots of macro shots taken with my 100mm here: http://spiffypix.com/p240306876(the first few dragonfly shots were taken with the MP-E). I love the 100mm.
Cheryl: I have a 50mm 1.8 and a 35mm and I love 18-200…. I love the 50, and the 18/200 rarely use the 35…..might sell it
Pam: I just ordered the Sigma 50mm 1.4 today can’t wait till it gets here!
Kimberlea: If you looking for close up portrait shots I use a 50mm 1.8f. A true macro is a 1:1 might not be what your looking for as far as portraits.
Simone: I have the 50mm 1.4 which is my go to lens. I also have the 24-70mm but I mainly use the 50mm. What sort of photography do you do?
Katie: I love my 100mm f/2.8. LOVE it.
Katherine: 100mm canon its hands down the best macro lens and you can use it as a portrait lens
Karen: I have the 50mm f1.8, its one of my favorites! I love it for portraits and as a great walk around lens. I also own the 100mm f2.8 IS, and IMO it is the best between the 60mm and the 100 mm lens to use for macro, plus it is good for portraits too! (two for the price of one!) I do not own the 60mm, but I have rented it before. It also is a good lens, but the distance-to-subject working space of the 60mm is less than the 100mm. Something that is always good to have when working with insects and/or children, they love their space when you have a camera in hand. 😉 All three are great lens, and you will get great results with any one of them with the more you use it. Good luck with your choice!
Kanyon: Simone, I would like to take more pics of small details on infants…like a close up of their eyes & eyelashes. But I mostly would use lens for body shots & upper body shots of kids & infants. If possible I would like to take pics of insects too
Jaye: A Macro lens isn’t what you need, just a good portrait lens. A Macro lens is good if you want to take pictures of her pores, but for a close up portrait a 50mm will suffice. If you want to do Macro photography (like insects, bees, detail shots, etc.) the 100mm is great. I have one that I love. HOWEVER, for the price tag it’s not really worth it when Keiko extensions tubes do the same thing for a fraction of the cost.
Melanie: But don’t the extension tubes affect the photo quality or knock down the light? you have to stop down a lot to make up for loss of light, no?
