Question from Gail: ” I have a Canon EOS Rebel XSi 450D. I have several lenses and want to stay with Canon. So the big question is what camera should I go to next? There are so many with all kinds of numbers after the name – 6D, 5D, mark II, mark III?? or something else?”

Sarah: I’m too looking to upgrade my T2i and would like any recommendations.

Eric:  Depends on your budget really. I had a 450D and moved onto 60D and I love it because it was such a big jump too. But if your budget does allow, get the mk III

Tina:  it depends on if you want full sensor or not. IF you want a full sensor I would get a 5d mark iii and if you are not ready for that I would suggest the 7d

Joyce:  Uh my Rebel shutter button just stopped working, seems as if the spring below it has given out.   It’s a sad day in my house well for me at least

Aaron: Depends on what you want to do with it….if you’re not shooting professionally I would recommend getting a 6D or 7D and investing in better glass. No sense in getting something that you’re not going to be able to take advantage of its full capabilities.

Shanyn: If you can afford it. Go mark iii!!! I love mine.

Diane:  I also have the XSI, and am dying to go better, not sure which one, I do portraits mostly senior photos, some families. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Diane: Tina Weibe, tell me the difference with full sensor and without. Please.

Della: Your EF-S lenses will not fit on a full frame camera and a friend of mine just upgraded from the mark ii to a iii and is having to have her lenses adjusted to fit the iii. So be wise before you buy.

Holo: NIKON

Cheryl:  Love. My. 7d

Melanie: My husband is eyeing up the Mark III for me… got to love that! Beware though – your lenses may not transfer. I can’t remember what series they have to be, but there is one.

Lissa: Mark ii or iii

Misty:  I just upgraded from t2i to 60d, would have went w 7d if I could have afforded but I’m loving the 60d it’s a nice upgrade until I can go to 7d or 5d mark II or III. My friends say the same thing: invest in glass. My pro friend has been shooting w a 7d forever and swears by it.

Johnny: Sony!

Steven:  The t2i, t3i, t4i, 60d, and 7d all have about the same sensor, so you won’t notice a huge difference there. The 7d has a faster shooting speed (around 10 pictures a second if my memory serves me right) and has a better autofocus. However the 7d is also the oldest and uses cf cards. The 6d and 5d are full frames so if you have EF-S lenses, then you’ll have to buy all new lenses in the EF mount. Also, FF cameras larger sensor would show the edges of the lens more, and is often the weakest part of a lens. The 5d ii has focus issues from what I understand. Haven’t heard much about the 6d. The 5d iii rocks, but is expensive. If you go FF consider buying a 5d ii over a 6d. Also, the FFs are much more expensive and really shine with more expensive lenses. If I could afford to upgrade right now, I’d go 60d. Rumor is that there’ll be a 7d and 60d replacement next year.

Renee: @Steve….why buy the 5dii over the 6d…..the reviews sound better on the 6d (to be released in Dec) than the 5dmarkii. I went from a rebel t1i to a 60d (am very very pleased with my 60d) , now looking to upgrade soon. I am eying the 6d when it comes out in Dec. I don’t want to spend the money on the 5dmarkiii….and the 5dmarkii seems a little slow from what I read and hear. Any opinions on the 6D that will be here soon?????

Colleen: a lot depends upon your budget…..if its endless….get the markIII….lots of the II frustrations are fixed….

Colleen:  p.s. check out dpreview.com…a great site to do research and ensure you get the camera that works best for what you shoot and your budget. good luck….

Melissa:  if you are slowly upgrading i would suggest the 7D…don’t waste your money on a 60D as its processor is very slow! but if you have money to spend the mark III is definitely the way to go as BP4U has shown examples of the awesome work it puts out!

Steven: The reason for looking at a 5dii over a 6d is a 5dii is less expensive than a 6d. I’ve not read any reviews on the 6d, so I don’t know how the 6d stacks up.

Steven: Sorry, should have said to consider the choice between a 5dii or 6d, not imply get one over the other.

Christy: If you shoot a lot, go with the best you can afford (Mark III is much better with grain than Mark II). The higher end cameras will take lots more pix before needing to replace the shutter.

Gail: Thanks for all your thoughts. I shoot mostly landscape with some portrait stuff and some sports (hockey mostly) thrown in once in a while but landscape being the focus of my shooting. Lenses I currently own are Canon 50mm EF 1.8, Canon 100mm EF 2.8, Sigma 50-150mm APO HSM 2.8m and the 2 that came with the camera – 18-55mm EFS and 75-300mm EF.

Steven:  Looking at the lens inventory you have right now, you will be able to use your 50 and 100mm primes, and your 75-300mm (which I read is mediocre at best). If you are considering FF which it sounds like you probably wont be doing based on your lens ranges, also factor in getting a good all-around lens, like a 24-105 f/4.0 L (around $900 at least) or a 24-70 f/2.8 L (over 1500 I’m sure) in addition to the extra cost of a FF camera. Also, the crop sensors make a 100mm look like a 160mm lens, so you won’t have that extra reach that you do with a crop sensor on FF.
I’d say 7d or 60d for you, if you can afford it, 7d.

Gail:  I know I need to get some better lenses, that’s for sure, but good to know I can use some of the better ones I do have . Thanks for your help Steven! It really helps to hear about other’s cameras and what they like or don’t like about them. I will be making a Christmas list with some pricey items on it. Oh the lenses and cameras we would have if money were no object…

Steven: @Gail Hah! No kidding! I have just started down this expensive road myself, so I’m devouring anything I can. I have a low-end Rebel T3, 18-55 kit lens, and 50mm f/1.8 II. On the Birthday and Christmas list is the 100mm 2.8 Macro USM, the EF-S 55-250mm, and a Speedlite 430EX II. Probably next year, upgrade to a 60D or 7D (or the rumored 7D II), and toss in a EF-S 15-85mm.
