Question from Ray: “A graphic designer who designer invitations, flyer, banners, etc… would like to use some of my images for his business. What is a reasonable price to charge per image? Does exchanging for services sound reasonable?”
Carla: sometimes you can get more out of an exchange than if you were to be paid cash….not good to make a habit but it can be very good for business too if its a service that gets you exposure, good idea
Eric: No, charge money. You should license your images to him for a certain period of time (or a certain amount of prints, product etc… you can work out the terms). Figure out how long the piece took you to create, how much he’ll be making from selling your images and remember that your image is a crucial part of the equation. Don’t undersell it just to “gain exposure”.
Eric: In short, there’s no simple answer, all of those factors have to be considered, but don’t underestimate how valuable your work is. Sometimes even a fair price will scare away a prospective buyer, but that’s because they were hoping to get it for next to nothing which isn’t fair to you.
