Question from Della: “I really prefer to not have to edit my photos; however, there are times when it’s necessary especially on a big group of people. So, what lighting do you use in the room where you are doing your edits? Or, just none? I sent a pic off for a test print and it came back not anywhere like I thought it would look. And, yes, I have calibrated my screen. I have noticed that if I use the lamp there is a warm glow to the room as opposed to the overhead lights, etc. Hmmm?”
Amanda: you’re supposed to calibrate with the ambient lights on, and edit with those same lights for the best result. Also, does your lab have an ICC profile that you should be using?
Kelli: I turn off all the lights when I edit. That way I can accurately see whats on the screen. When’s the last time you calibrated? You may need to do it again.
Hollie: ou should always edit photos under the same light you calibrated your screen. So, if you calibrated with the warm light on, the colors will be right based on that. If you calibrate with the lights off, but then edit with the light on, your color correction edits will be wrong. I recommend editing in a dark room, where the only light is from your computer. That way the lighting conditions never change and you will have the most accurate color and calibration possible.
However, another factor for the print being different is the color profile of your image file versus the color profile of the printer. For best results, call your printer and see what printer profiles they use, then make sure you color manage your computer and editing software appropriately.
Crystal: My calibration equipment/software measures the ambient light in the room every 5 minutes and adjusts my screens accordingly. Does the one you’re using do this? Might be something worth looking into also.
Silver: Crystal what do you use?
Mollie: Silver Lane…I use Colormunki
