Question from Shannon: “Getting ready to do portraits ,in a dept. store at the make-up counter. I have a nikkon slr body, looking for one lens to do awesome portraits? Please advise . Also ,under those type of lights should I have a on camera flash?”
Kelli: I would choose the 50mm 1.4g. I dont think you would need a flash. Keep the Aperature at 1.4 or 1.6
Tricia: I agree with Kelli
Brian: Don’t use flash, shoot in raw so you can adjust white balance later, unless you have a grey card and can do a custom white balance. What lenses do you have that we can choose from? and what body are you using?
Arnaud: Yup, 50mm f/1.4 opened fairly wide should be able to handle the available light of a department store, But I’m pretty sure that you will have no problems as the lights in department stores are extremely bright.
Christian: I use the Nikon 50mm 1.8 for all portraits. Its not as fast as the 1.4 but its the best lens you can buy for little $$. I’d go off camera flash through a softbox, but thats another animal!
Colleen: for portraits I would choose the 85 1.8 (or wider)…the 85 compresses a bit more than the 50…makes for a lovely portrait. I agree with softbox and I would suggest a custom white balance!! have fun!
