Question from Alex: “How do I open the shutter longer for my canon rebel xti?”

Brian: Go to Shutter priority or manual priority and set your shutter speed.

Most cameras limit the shutter to be open for a max of 30 seconds unless you have a BULB setting.

If you have a bulb setting, then as long as you’re pressing the shutter button, your shutter is open; it’ll close on release.

Jeremy: Brian is right but anything slower than 1/30th you will need a tripod to eliminate camera shake and keep your picture sharp. Another good idea is to either a shutter release cable or wireless one. I do this set up to shoot lightning and I have been very successful.

Jennifer: The xti does have a bulb setting
