Question from Kelli: “I shoot with a Nikon d300s, and I am looking to invest in a 24-70mm. I rented the Nikon lens awhile back and fell in love! Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with the Sigma or Tamron versions. I know some would say there is nothing like the real deal, but I was just wondering, with the huge price difference, is it really worth the extra money?”

Carole: Tamron makes an excellent lens

Heather: I spoke with a medical micro-something or another photographer and he said Tamron was the sharpest lens he has ever worked with.

Valerie:  I rented the Tamron version and it had major focusing issues… I wasn’t impressed at all.

Madison: I’m planning to get the 24-70 f2.8 VC Tamron with a Canon mount. I’ve talked to numerous camera stores, who all say the Tamron version is excellent! Same with reviews online. I’m assuming it’s the same for Nikon. I can’t afford the additional $1,000, and think that the Tamron version will serve me well!

Leah: to be a pro, it is always best to go for the real deal. This industry is not cheap, but not compromising on quality is the best approach to business. That said, you may be ok with a tamron, but I wouldn’t.

Maxine: I prefer Nikon lenses myself.

Jeff: I use the Sigma 24-60 f2.8 cannot fault it

Tom: The Tamron 24-70mm is an excellent value for the money and I’ve sold numerous portraits taken with it, you won’t be disappointed. I’ve shot with the Nikkor and the Tamron, you can’t really tell the difference unless you’re a pixel peeper.

Apple: I use Nikon equipment as well, but have several Sigman lenses and they are excellent! I really don’t think you would go wrong by using Sigma equipment. They certainly do the job for me.

Amanda:  I disagree with Leah. I’ve used both Tamron and Nikon in this lens. The Tamron is my favorite. The brokeh is amazing and it’s highly affordable. Don’t get sucked into the commercialized world that says a label makes something better or you a pro. After using both lenses none of my clients have said that my Tamron shots look unprofessional. Do your homework on the Tamron and you’ll find that nearly all users love it!

K. Ellen: I’ve had the tamron and just don’t love it. The nikon one is so much better. There’s a reason it costs that much more– it’s that much better.

Lindsay: I have gone through a tamron one. Thought it was amazing…. Until I had NIKON. Not the same!

Kelsey:  I rented both cause I asked this question few weeks ago. Nikon hands down!! Faster, quieter when focusing, I thought crisper pictures. The extra $1000 is worth it in the long run. The guy I talked to said he’s had his Nikon for 7 years never a problem. A friend of his has the sigma and she’s had to send it back to get fixed etc. 3 times already.

Lars:  3rd party lenses are usually cheaper for a reason. just saying.

Ian:  I shoot the tamron. It is tack sharp(even wide open) and I absolutely love it.

Michelle: I have a few tamrons and don’t have any trouble with them. I find them to be sharp. I would go with tamron and if you eventually want to upgrade that’s an option.

Janel:  I bought the Nikon 24-70mm and although it was expensive, the quality of my pics was improved greatly. This in turn created more business and I paid it off in a month!

Sue: I’ve used both tamron and sigma and no problem remember it isn’t the camera it’s the photo

Kelli: Thanks for the suggestions everyone! I might go ahead and get the Tamron for now then save up for the Nikon later! 🙂
