Q&A with Featured Photographer: Melissa Rosic

Tell us about you, who you are, hobbies, fav things. Can be random and silly!

I’m a caffeine addict… hazelnut latte from Starbucks are my favorite. I’m a jeans, tee shirts, and toms kind of gal. I love different, unique items.. which really doesn’t help with my new etsy.com addiction. Currently I have been collecting vintage afghans… granny square pattern is my favorite.

When did you first realize you wanted to be a photographer?

I have a BA in Fine Art Education with a concentration in Painting, I have dabbled a bit in Ceramics and Printmaking. None of these genres stuck. I always had a camera around and would shoot for fun. It really has not been until this year that I have actually called myself a “Photographer”.

2

How did you first start out?

I started my photographic journey after my son Evan was born. I wanted to document his life in a creative, artistic way.

3

How did know when the right time to start charging was?

I guess my clients (my family and friends) helped decided this for me. They started offering me “a little something” and it progressed from there.

4

How would you describe your style?

Relaxed, Candid & Colorful. I love lifestyle photography the most. I love to capture the simple everyday events in an honest, natural way. Stiff posed sessions are not for me.

5

What’s in your gear bag?

Canon 5D Mark iii

Sigma Art 35 mm f1.4

Canon 50 mm 1.8

Canon 85 mm f1.8

6

One lens you can’t live without?

I have not used anything else since buying my Sigma Art 35 mm. It is by far my favorite lens.

7

How much did you charge for your first session and how much are you charging for the same type of session now?

My first sessions were mini sessions and I charged $20 for a 30 min session. Now I am charging $200 for the same type of session.

How did you market yourself when you started out?

Facebook was my main source of marketing. I posted images on my personal page and eventually created a fan page. I started to separate my personal and business images while building a decent client base. Most of my original clients are still with me. Facebook is still my number 1 marketing tool but with the complicated “rules” for Facebook Business page I seem to reach more through my personal page now.
