This was my first time trying to do a night rain shot. I got my assistant to hold the flash right behind the couple. The rain was very light but I loved the result! One of my most recent wedding photos. I just love the golden field, the sun setting, the smiles on the couple, and the fact that I decided to place them right in the middle of the frame.
I really enjoy fashion and love doing portraits of young girls who I meet that don’t have modeling experience. This girl’s name is Emma, she’s from Germany and lives in South Africa. From the moment I met her – I knew I had to photograph her. She was a natural in front of the camera! For this particular shot I framed her within the train’s windows and made her face the source of light.
One of my favorite silhouette photos. We woke up by 4am to get this shot. Sun comes up very early in South Africa in the summer! I moved around to make sure I got the summer in between the couple.
This is one of my favorite wedding photos because of the leading lines. I lied flat in the ground to take this shot with a wide angle lens. I made the couple hold hands and got them both to look towards the sun which was already setting.
This girl in front of my lens is a very good friend of mine and an awesome photographer! She was visiting me when we decided to grab the camera and go have some fun. When we got to the beach I realized it was low tide and the day was very hazy. I had bought that awesome umbrella online a while before. I’m always searching for quirky props! I asked Judith to stand on a rock and shake the umbrella a bit while pretending to hush someone to her left side. A bit of editing was done afterwards and the end result is an image I absolutely love!
I also enjoy playing around with shadows and shapes. I once was visiting a fabric shop and spotted this pattern. The fabric itself I thought was ugly, but soon realized could work perfectly to create shadows! I got the model to stand in front of a plain wall and got two other people holding the fabric in front of her. We did this in a bright day, using only sunlight.
For this shot I stood on a step ladder and got the couple to lie on the ground. The texture of the dry ground with the grass makes it for a very interesting image. I used a wide angle lens and held the camera on top of them trying to shoot straight down at them.
One of my favorites: Front bokeh! During a wedding in Guadalajara, México, there were fairy lights in that garden that I knew would work perfectly to create bokeh! I shot this image with a wide aperture of F/2.0 to create bokeh. I had someone assisting and holding an on camera flash on the couple who were standing about 2 meters away from the lights.
This is a favorite image because it was already getting dark, the sun had set, and I couldn’t get enough of this awesome couple. It was such a perfect day! We were in a beautiful spot in South Africa called Morgan Bay with an incredible view. I got the couple to stand on a rock while I stood on a spot where I couldn’t see anything else but the sky and water. I used my canon 50mm 1.4 lens, raised the ISO to 800 since we didn’t have much sunlight anymore, opened the aperture to 2.2, and shot at 160th of a second. I simply love how beautiful the tones came out, I edited it with a preset to resemble the film kodak portra 800 (the grain gives it the feel of film). Centering the couples in the middle has become my obsession!
I’ve realized I usually try do silhouette photos of my couples. This one has to be a favorite! It was done at Turbine Hall in Johannesburg. The big windows give the image such an urban feel. I asked the couple to dance, have fun, and this was the result.
One of my first times trying an on camera double exposure. I’ve learned that the canon mark3 has such awesome features to do double exposure. For this particular shot I took their portrait first. Then, using the raw file – I visited a park and started shooting under this beautiful big tree. I used the additive exposure option for this image. Such a dreamy and happy shot!
For the shot below, I used powder milk to fill up my bath tub. I had my subject lie on her side and hold her hand right on top of the water. This way it would seem as if she was lying on a bed of milk. I was standing on the edge of the tub and leaning on top of her! I did have to clone out pieces of the bathtub in post production, but love the end result.
I often get brides worried when it rains on their wedding day. This time I decided to play a bit with the raindrops on a window. This image personally feels like an old painting, a stunning bride with a moody background and enough raindrops to tell a little story.
Another favorite as it mixes fashion and my favorite city, New York! For this shot I got my subject to walk on the side of the street and to look up to make sure the reflection on her sunglasses wouldn’t be too busy. I waited until I got a yellow cab in the background; the perfect New York prop!
A favorite family portrait! This was done against the Arab sun in Abu Dhabi. It was a stunning, hot day. As the sun was setting, I decided to tell the family to hold hands and walk towards the sun. At some point they were looking at each other when I snapped the photo and this was the moment that I captured.
Hi, I’m Steff. I’m a wedding and portrait photographer. I was born in a beautiful, small town in México called Chapala. I studied communication sciences at ITESO in Guadalajara. One of my favorite subjects was photography. I just loved being in the dark room! Since I was little my father taught me how to use his camera and I was hooked. After I finished my degree, I moved to New York and took a few workshops at the School of Visual Arts. While living in New York, I met my now hubby who’s from South Africa. We’re currently settled in East London, South Africa. I travel at least once a year to México, making my business grow in both countries. I have gipsy feet and can’t stay still in one place! I love traveling. I feel so lucky to be able to photograph people and weddings in different countries. I wouldn’t know how to precisely describe my photographic style. I love simplicity. I enjoy capturing true emotions and editing the photos in such a way that they resemble the unique feel of film. I love silhouettes, front bokeh, and lately I’m really enjoying centering my subjects right in the middle of the frame!
