Starting your own business is overwhelming in and of itself. Add to that a desire to create perfect pictures and happy clients and you may feel in over your head. Before you freak out, let BP4U come to your rescue! Traci Ryant’s Studio Guide covers everything you need to know for setting up, organizing and running a successful photography studio.
Setting Up Your Studio
Any photographer will tell you that lighting is crucial!
When choosing a location for your studio, make sure you first study the lighting throughout the day. You’ll want to know what to expect when it’s sunny, overcast or even storming.
The best lighting is indirect sunlight, which is soft and warm. Direct light shining through your windows can lead to harsh, unflattering shadows. You’ll also want to make sure there is an even casting of light throughout your space, especially in the area you’ll do the most shooting.
4 More Tips for Setting Up Your Studio
- Always have comfortable furniture for your clients to sit in while you’re taking photographs. Traci says that a comfortable client equals a happy client.
- Have a variety of backdrops, floordrops, furniture props and wearables on hand.
- Keep your studio as organized as possible, even if you don’t have much space. When everything has its place, you’ll feel more at ease and your sessions will run more smoothly.
- Make sure your client’s have a private bathroom, especially if you have clientele who breast feed or need to change diapers, etc.
The things I’ve mentioned here merely scratch at the surface of Traci Ryant’s Studio Guide. In addition to teaching you how to set up your studio, Traci goes into topics such as props, booking, marketing, budgeting — even insurance and taxes. Click here for more information or to buy the guide.
