Question from Amy: “For those natural light only photographers out there- what do you do for children’s sessions during the winter? Brave the cold or wait until spring?”
Kristen: I do in home lifestyle sessions and a few outdoor playing in snow sessions.
Elisha: Wait til spring..unless someone really wants a winter shoot where they’re bundled up. I recommend mini sessions–20-30 min tops if it’s pretty cold. Or you could do an hour and take a “warm up break” in the middle in your vehicles or somewhere warm
Stephanie: We’re pretty lucky weather-wise here in NC, so I still do outdoor sessions. I also team up with a local dance studio ( that has awesome, North-facing windows) to do stylized holiday sessions for Valentine’s day and St. Pat ‘s and/or march madness ( if local teams make it).
Jeff: Depending on where you live, go for it. I shoot my fall pictures late September early October, weather permitting. And your client’s’ needs. I agree that they should be quick and decisive.
Casey: Brave the cold!! I keep those little hand warmers and blankets in my bag at all times! (If they’re wearing gloves or mittens, they can even put the warmers inside!! Or in their pockets!)
Jen: I brave the cold…we had a pretty mild winter last year so it wasn’t that bad! I also will go to homes and do shoots inside/outside at their house!
Heather: one of the many benefits of shooting in Florida! What cold weather?
Amanda: Brave the cold.. We are in the South so usually it’s not that bad.. =)
Camile: Invest in learning how to use flash, especially off camera flash. Seriously. It will change your life. I love natural light the most, but sometimes, flash is needed. Period. It is part of the craft.
Carolins’ Photography: I am with Camile, get a really good flash, learn how to use it for maximum benefit indoors and out. I subscribed to The Dedicated Photographer, I found her newsletters, tips and tricks were wonderful and helpful.
Steve: Shoot inside, near windows but always use a reflector or bounced flash, remember the model HAS to be comfortable, plus in cold weather, they are more likely to get rosy cheeks and runny noses and we don’t want that!!
