Use the sun for a natural flare by placing it just behind a tree, a bush, or a flower for instance. Let the sun poke through, adjust your camera settings to the subject, and adjust highlights after if they are blown out a bit.
For this shot, I told them to ‘almost kiss’. I love the look of a couple when they are about to kiss, but they are not quite there – just looking into each others eyes. Sometimes, I tell them to look at each others lips.
Even if the sun is just behind or beside the subjects head – it can create a beautiful hazy look. Increasing the exposure a bit can help to create the hazy look! Don’t be scared to take a few different shots, some directly behind and some beside for example. The settings for this one shot were 1/125 sec; f/6.3; ISO 320.
If you are limited in time (golden hour can pass quickly) do a close up, medium shot and wide shot, with the same or similar pose. They can still all be unique in their own way.
Silhouettes can be nice too! The sun was just behind the mans head.Adjust your camera settings to the background, instead of the subject. IE the settings here were 1/400 sec; f/11; ISO 320.
Sometimes a VERY wide shot can be fun! The subject doesn’t always have to be the largest part of the photo.
Find a shady spot and shot towards an area/background the sun is shining on, and use the bright backdrop to give your image a 3d look! Adjust your settings in between the subject and background — and then bring up highlights and shadows in post. The settings for this shot were 1/125 sec; f/6.3; ISO 320.
Grab a few shots right when there is still 5 min of light left at sunset. The best shots for me are when there are few clouds – it gives the image some contrast!
