What to Say: Why Do You Charge This Much For Your Photography

Today we are talking about when you send a potential client your pricing and they respond back in complete shock at your prices. We’ve all been there… am I right? Then you’re in this awkward position of being like, “yeah this is what I charge…” It’s super weird but we have something to help you with this! We took this from our 75 Hard To Write Emails for Photographers. Here’s exactly what to say without it being so dang awkward! #Winning

We are going to give you two versions of an email. The first version, is when you’re not willing to compromise your prices and the second is when you are willing to work with that client.

But first…Congratulations, photog superstar! You’re officially doing well enough to price out some potential clients. I know it can feel scary to turn away business, but it’s part of the process, and doing so frees up your time to book clients who are willing to pay the fee you want. Remember: not everyone will be able to afford you, and that’s OK. This email thanks the client for their time and then kindly moves on.

Hi [Client’s Name],

Thank you so much for expressing interest in setting up a shoot with [company name]. I completely understand that the pricing doesn’t work with your budget at this time, but please know that I am so flattered that you thought to reach out to us in the first place.

Also, congratulations on [your newborn, your pregnancy, your upcoming wedding]. I’m excited for what the future holds for you and your family! If you ever want to set up a shoot in the future, please don’t hesitate to hit me up!

Cheers,

If a potential client expresses that your current pricing is out of their budget, but you’re willing to negotiate a discount, send this email. The goal is to figure out what they’re looking for and how much they’re willing to pay.

Subject: Booking a Session With [Company Name]

Hi [Client’s Name],

First, I’m super flattered that you’re interested in booking a session with [company name], and so glad that you reached out. Second, I totally understand where you’re coming from regarding the pricing and I’d like to work with you to come up with a fee that works for both of us.

Can you tell me specifically what you’re looking for? For example, how many hours would you like, how many images are you expecting, and how many locations were you envisioning? Also, what does your photography budget look like?

FYI – we can also work out payment installations, so you wouldn’t have to pay for everything up front.

Let’s make this work!
