Question from Rae-Lynn: “Hello, I am shooting my first event at the end of the month for a Masquerde ball. We are using a plain black backdrop with an overlay to frame it that has the name and date of the event at the bottom and some spooky art around the images. My question is: How far back do you think I should set my tripod up and at what focal length do you recommend? The setting will remain the same all night ( like prom or a formal’s pictures)”

Valerie:  Are you using strobes? What lens do you plan to use? I’m usually at a shutter speed of 250, aperture f11, iso 100, using a 17-50mm, maybe 6 ft from my subject.

Rae-Lynn: I am renting the below lighting kit because I didn’t think my flash would be enough because they requested shooting on a black backdrop. I am shooting a 7d with a canon 17-40 mm 1:4 L but my backup lens is the kit lens 28-135mm

Rae-Lynn: I have a Di866 flash that I was thinking of adding to the set up if it’s possible

Valerie: You’ll be fine with the two lights. Use your 17-40mm, you’ll be fine. Will you have time to do a few tests before? Shoot in manual mode, and watch your histogram

Rae-Lynn: I will get there at 4 to set up. They start to show at 7:30. I am so excited but so nervous!   thank you for the help and reassurance!
