Question from Amanda: “I have a 5dm2; when I’m recording video, it only gives me about 7-9 seconds. Batteries are charged, and there’s plenty of memory. I’ve gone thru he video settings, what’s going on?”

Rich:  I have the same issue

Nicole:  What class is your memory card, you need at least a class 10 for the memory card to keep up speed wise with the camera.

Meg: sounds like your memory card…the video takes the memory card FAST!!!

Crystal:  I don’t know if this is the case with the 5DMarkII because I haven’t tried to record video on mine…but the T2i had the same problem. The issue for that camera had nothing to do with me…it had to do with the camera itself. When recording in full HD (1920×1080), Canon put an auto shut-off at about 7-9 seconds to keep the camera from overheating. For some reason, it can’t handle recording more than that without getting too hot. When you switch the quality of the recording from HD to standard (640×480), you don’t have this problem. If I had to guess, I would imagine the same issue may be happening in your case. Try changing the quality and see if it records for longer periods of time.

Tommy: It’s the memory card, you need at least a 30mb/s card if I’m not mistaken. 60mb/s would be ideal

Amanda:  Thanks! I thought it had to have something to do with the card; I have a handful of Kingston 4g from Adorama that don’t say the speed on them (my even in their specs), and also some better quality sandisk 60mb/s. That must be it; with the Kingston cards, works with the lower quality recording size like Crystal said. Thanks everyone! I have recorded for much longer durations the past few years, the only new things were the cards but didn’t realize the speed & not size was the issue.
