Question from Dexter: “How many photos do you take during events/travels/anywhere? I use my d7000 and I take a lot of pictures day til’ night in about 500 photos, sometimes more. Do you think I should lessen my shots? would it affect the camera’s lifespan (shutter actuation)? Thanks!”
Allison: good question I look forward to the answer
Sarah: Oh man, I take 500 per session I think! I way over-shoot.
Marissa: You should treat your digital shots like you treat film shots.. As though you’re spending money on every shot, it really helps you shoot less and spend more time on the shots you really want. Patience above all else is key
Samuel: I shoot like crazy too (500+) usually. But I’d rather overshoot and get that perfect shot (even if it’s by accident) than to undershoot and be disappointed.
Christina: me too i over shoot way to much. but if you get in the habit which i am trying too….{key words trying} tell your self its a roll of film….you only have a certain about of images you can shoot before you have to change it.
Samuel: I have to disagree with Marissa and say that you shouldn’t carry that kind of mentality. Plan your shots of course, and aim for perfection but don’t be scared to take the shot because it doesn’t cost you anything and you can always fix what you didn’t like looking at the preview on the screen.
Tim: Slow down. The masters like Herri Cartier Bresson waited for the decisive moment. His images are timeless. Quality over quantity.
Felicia: I think what Marissa is getting at is that you get more quality shots if you preplan how you want it to look instead of overshooting and hoping you get a good one. By overshooting, you’re diminishing your photographic skills and getting more snapshots than photographs.
Angela: I’ve found that when I plan out a shot, I get more quality images in a shoot rather than a couple hundred crappy ones that I have to fish through to find just a few good ones. I took my time at a daycare shoot yesterday and didn’t take more than 5 images of each child to get a great full body and head shot! It’s completely changed the way I shoot!
Tom: Weddings, 2000+
Portrait sessions, 200-350
Other events like a party, 500-750
Mollie: Your digital camera DOES have a predetermined life span. It’s measured in clicks. Can sometimes find it online. So it couldn’t hurt to cut back – but don’t miss out on recording a memory just because you’re worried about the lifespan!
Kimberly: I have the d7000 as well……I love it and I love to shoot….and shoot and shoot! I don’t believe there is a such thing as overshootingL
