Question from Brittany: “I took up photography about a year ago, and I wanted to begin doing senior photos. Any recommendations on how much to start off charging?”
Shanyn: Have you built your portfolio with example of senior shoots you’ve done?
Stephanie: I would find a good friend that you dont charge but that will give you a start to your portfolio. Then after you get some good ones under your belt then you should start thinking about how much you can charge.
Stephanie: oh and don’t focus on seniors specifically … take anyones picture that will let you! then if you want to get specialized you can!
Tera: Since you are not as experienced as some, like I am not, I suggest checking the prices of other photographers in your area and going from there. I myself try to charge half of what others are doing, just so I can build my experience. (Also doesn’t hurt to have some sort of contest where the winner gets a free session. This will build your experience as well.)
Kat: I agree. Checkout prices in your area and keep your prices lower. Offer free sessions for a few friends and post them on FB or weebly.com. You can get cheap brochures on vistaprint.com to pass out (at the mall, to colleagues, and to friends)
Laura: I wouldn’t charge until you know more about photography and everything there is to know about your camera. Build a portfolio of the genre that you want to shoot. Shoot for free until you are good. That way you won’t have to worry about not producing good work while taking someone’s money.
James: It’s not the price you charge for your work, it’s the quality you produce. If you are good enough, don’t charge too little!
