Question from Sara: “Questions on wedding reception lighting, have a 580 exii, a 600ex-rt and an alien bee. Just haven’t had the chance to really figure it all out yet… Suggestions?”
Brian: You probably want to figure it out before heading to the wedding. At least be comfortable enough to be able to use all 3 without too much fussing around…
With that said, you probably will only be able to use the AB on a monopod with a softbox and an assistant holding it for you, this way you can get maximum use out of it without having to change much. Which leads me to believe that you probably will only get to use it while you’re doing portraits.
As for the flashes, I recommend a flash bracket. Fill light is nice, just not with all nasty shadows on the right when you go vertical.
Also 3-4 sets of batteries for everything. You just can never have enough batteries.. and you definitely don’t want to miss a moment due to a slow recycle time on your flash.
Sasha: Go to the church or where ever its going to be held with a friend and practice practice practice. Get it right before you go home and practice until you feel super comfortable. Don’t leave until you think you got it right. There are no do overs with weddings. You can’t reshoot. So practice!
Brian: ^– I would have to say this is a must for all weddings…. not just for this particular question.
