Creating mood and emotion is key to shooting successful and beautiful Boudoir images. Each client will be different so it is important to communicate with them about what they expect out of their session. Every woman has a unique and beautiful personality and it is our job to bring that out in a more intimate way.
I accomplish this by using light and body position to create a mood that is both beautiful and sensual. In my work, a lot of times when I want an image to have more impact, I use black and white conversion. I feel that black and white imagery has a classic feel that takes away distraction from the viewer and helps them ‘feel’ the image in a more raw sense as you will see in the following images.
For the photograph below I used my Canon EOS 5D Mark II. Settings: F/3.5 at 1/125 sec ISO-800 and 50mm focal length. Shot using natural light and no modifier.
In this photo I wanted to capture her sensuality and softness by shooting low light and allowing the natural light to kiss her body. The hand placement gives a sense of longing and self exploration giving her a sensual feel, while the deep black and white adds a bit of mystery to her. I also used my Canon EOS 5D Mark II for the next photo. Settings: F/3.5 at 1/200 sec ISO-100 and 35mm focal length. Shot using natural light and no modifier.
I wanted to capture the more vulnerable side of a woman in this image. I wanted to capture her soft beauty. The body placement creates a bit of insecurity and shyness about her. Again, using the natural, soft light with a matte black and white post process, it adds to the softness of the overall image completing my vision and mood for this particular client.
I again used my Canon EOS 5D Mark II for the image below. Settings: F/3.2 at 1/160 sec ISO-2000 and 50mm focal length. Shot using natural light and no modifier.
For this image, I wanted to give the illusion of a voyeur. (as if someone is peaking in on this beautiful client in her most relaxed state.) It gives you the sense of comfort and peace. The soft lines of her body and the way the light falls makes for an impactful black and white conversion giving a raw, sensual feel.
For the last image I used my Canon EOS 5D Mark II. Settings: F/3.5at 1/100 sec ISO-800 and 50mm focal length. Shot using natural light and no modifier.
This image, I feel, gives off a strong sense of purity. With her body being curled up and her soft expression it gives a feel of an almost childlike woman who has an innocence about her. I shot this image through a vintage lace curtain to add a bit of texture and the black and white brings a classic and old film feel to the photograph. Again, I like to focus on the natural light and how it falls naturally in its organic state.
