Photographing twins can be a lot of fun, it is also a lot of work, too! I have put together a few tips that I’ve learned along the way!
- Prep Parents: Make sure that you always prep your clients prior to coming to the session. When you prep them beforehand, the session will flow much smoother. Tell them how you run your sessions, this way they are fully prepared and know exactly what to expect from you. I tell them how important it is for babies to be fed ahead of session time, this way the babies are nice and full and sleepy. I also advise them how to have babies dressed prior to the session. I let them know that it is best to have them dressed in something that’s easy to undress, such as something with snaps or a zipper, this way I’m not waking the babies as I undress them.
- Assist Parents: I always try to assist the parents whenever possible with feeding {if bottle fed} and also with undressing. An extra pair of hands is always helpful with twin babies!
- Pose them together: When posing babies together, make sure you get the first baby posed and settled before you add in the second baby.
For this shot, I wrapped both babies and then placed them as close together as I could on the beanbag. I placed the headbands on them and took the photo.
For this image, I placed the first baby on the beanbag in the chin in hands pose, then I placed the second baby right next to her as close as I could. I then placed a wrap around their backs to keep them warm. I adjusted their headbands and then took the photo. For this shot, they were already in place from the image above, and just to add a variation, I took one of babies hands and wrapped it around her sister as to give her a hug and then took the shot from behind them. I absolutely LOVE photographing this angle! It gives the parents a nice variation to their images.
4. Pose them separately: It’s important for the parents to also have individual images of each baby in addition to having images of them together. For this shot, I placed the baby in the bum up pose, placed the wrap and hat on her, and took to shot. For this photo, I placed baby in the chin in hands pose, placed the wrap on her, and then took the shot. Right after, I added the second baby as you can see from the images above this.
5. Always have an assistant: Having an assistant is so helpful, especially when your doing a newborn session with more than one baby! I usually have my daughter as my assistant and sometimes even mom or dad will help. Newborn safety is SO important and having an assistant just makes the sessions go smoothly. This is a pull back shot taken straight out of camera to show you where my assistant’s hand was to help me get this shot of the babies. After this shot, I did place the babies in a better position to get a better shot of them.
