Photographer Tips: How to Photograph Tweens

Hi! I’m Angela of Angela Smith Photography, based in Pittsburgh, Pa. I absolutely love what I do! When I first got my hands on a camera my only goal was just to capture my four beautiful babies! I’m so blessed to have been able to turn my passion into something I get to share with the world!

“I truly feel honored when I’m called upon to capture a special moment. I value love and family and get excited every time my clients want to share their memories with me. I have truly found something that fulfills me, and for that I couldn’t be more happy!”

Tips for Photographing Tweens:

  • Get to know them, this is so important! Create small talk to find out about their likes and dislikes. Who their favorite teacher is, what their BFF’s name is! More than anything else just be genuine and yourself.
  • It’s so important to take photos of them doing what they love! They will feel more comfortable doing what is familiar to them rather than just posing in front of the camera.
  • Get their input!  Ask them if they have any ideas for their shoot. If there are any “must have” shots at their photo session. They may be young but they have a story to tell, so let them tell it!
  • A lot of times this is their first solo photo shoot so remember to praise them and let them know that they are doing great! They may feel awkward or feel that they look “silly”. Encouragement can go a long way.

IMG_1622 For this image I asked her to pretend that she was in dance class. Pretend that we were not in the park, that she was alone by herself. I wanted her to do whatever it is that she does to get ready before a dance rehearsal.

kiona and TIMIA (1 of 1) For this image I wanted it to be as simple as possible, but also powerful at the same time. So I asked her to just look at the camera. Not to smile, Just look straight a head. I wish I could take credit for the pointing of the toes, but I can not. When she did it, i looked at her feet and she simply said. “It’s a dancer thing, I always do it.” And Oh how it worked!

IMG_1624 Her ballet shoes are so much apart of who she is, I wanted to focus on the shoes and nothing more.

IMG_1645 This image started off with her just playing around and I snapped the camera. I knew I had something so I asked her to do it again!

IMG_1620 This image is where I called out to her certain dancer poses that I knew, and she was such a sport to try every single one for me! I had so much fun watching her do these, it was amazing to watch.

IMG_1621 This image I again wanted her to pretend that she was not in front of the camera, but in her dance class, listening to instructions from her teacher. This is what she gave me and she nailed it!

Ballet Shoes This image was my client’s idea. She wanted to show the different sides of her. That, yes, was is a dancer, but she also is tomboy at heart.
